Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John Wilson James Wilson Carmichael (9 June – 2 May ), also known as John Wilson Carmichael, was a British maritime and landscape artist who painted in oil and watercolours. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne and later in London, he was a household name in his lifetime, and his work remains some of the most desirable in the marine art market. [2].
John Wilson Carmichael (also known as Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John Wilson Carmichael was the son of a ship's carpenter and went to sea at a young age. He completed an apprenticeship with a ship builder, but then established himself as a drawing master and miniature painter and became famous as John Wilson Carmichael artist.

Son of a shipbuilder, James John Wilson Carmichael was a painter of marine and landscapes subjects in both oil and watercolours, who was born in Newcastle and later moved to London until he retired and moved to Scarborough.
John Wilson Carmichael (1799-1868). Carmichael was an extremely versatile artist, painting landscape and architectural subjects. However, marine painting was his first love. Many of his pictures are of the North-East coast of Newcastle, in particular Whitby and Scarborough. Several of Carmichael's paintings are in public collections. The Laign Art Gallery held a Centenary.
